Eight-Three Suited

83s is a four-gapper, not a connector. The eight gives it a higher flush ceiling than lower suited hands, but the three adds little straight connectivity. Better eights dominate its pairs, so use it only in narrow late-position opens and priced Big Blind defenses.

Post-flop playability

83s has a few more straight routes than 83o, but the three does not create a second independent route, count the actual outs rather than upgrading every low connected board.
Two spades on the flop provide a flush draw. An eight-high flush can still lose to any higher flush, so multiway caution matters.
A pair of eights has a three kicker and is often behind better eights. A pair of threes is a weak bluff-catcher, not a value hand.
