84s is a three-gapper, not a connector. It has a better flush height and more useful straight routes than 82s or 83s, but it remains vulnerable when it pairs the eight. Treat it as a selective late-position open or Big Blind defense, not as a routine playable suited hand.

Earlier positions and aggressive tables reduce its value. Small Blind in a charted unopened pot with sufficient depth.

3bet when:Occasionally as a polarized bluff from a suitable position

Do not jam simply because it is suited. the short-stack chart and tournament context support it.

On 7♣ 6♦ 2♥, 84s has a gutshot to a five for 4-5-6-7-8. The rainbow texture offers no immediate flush draw.

Complete miss

On A♣ Q♦ 3♥, 84s has no pair or immediate straight draw. Fold to routine pressure unless the range and blockers justify a bluff.

Versus 3-bets

Fold frequently out of position or against a linear range. 84s can make dominated pairs and low flushes.
Continue selectively from the Big Blind when price and depth support a real draw, not merely a backdoor hope.

Post-flop playability

84s has more straight routes than the lower deuce and three hands, but its low gutshots remain vulnerable to higher straights and need a good price.
Two spades on the flop create a flush draw. An eight-high flush is stronger than lower flushes but still loses to every higher flush.
A pair of eights has a four kicker and is often dominated by A8, K8, Q8, T8, or 98. A pair of fours should usually remain a bluff-catcher.
