Strategic notes

Versus 3-bets
  • Call: Defend selectively when the price supports its wheel and flush equity.
  • Fold: A4s can defend its wheel and flush equity against width, but a narrow 3-bet range leaves its ace kicker buried.
Versus 4-bets
  • Fold: A4s usually cannot continue against a strong 4-bet value range.
  • Continue only: A rare exception needs a favorable price and position.
Post-flop playability
  • Draws: On a two-spade flop containing a 2 and a 3, A4s has the nut-flush draw and a gutshot to the wheel through a 5.
  • Control: When an ace flops without a four, A4s has top pair with a four kicker and remains behind better Ax.
  • Mistake: Do not confuse a top pair with a made wheel. The board must supply 2, 3, 4 and 5 for the wheel.
