A of hearts3 of hearts

Suited wheel ace

Ace-Three Suited

A3s can make the wheel and the nut flush. Its three kicker beats A2s on ace-high boards, but higher Ax hands dominate its top pair.

Open when:Late position and selected blind spots

Suited wheel and nut-flush potential improve its late-position value.

3bet when:Selected blocker-driven spots

The ace blocker supports pressure when the range plan calls for it.

Call when:Big blind or in position at a good price

A3s has both straight and flush routes to strong value.

Jam when:Short-stack chart support exists

Jam it when shorter stacks make fold equity the main source of value.

Fold when:Tight ranges or poor price

The suited label does not remove ace domination.

Strong against

A of spades2 of spades
A2s

A2s shares the Ace but has the weaker kicker, making a dominated pair that can still pay A3s.

Weak against

  • A of spadesK of spades
    AKs

AKs shares the Ace with the better kicker, so A3s can make a costly second-best pair.

Flop classes

K of spades4 of spades2 of hearts
Wheel and nut-flush draw

K♠ 4♠ 2♦ gives A3s a gutshot and the nut-flush draw.

5 of spades4 of hearts2 of spades
Made wheel

5♠ 4♦ 2♣ makes the wheel with A3s, without making a flush.

A of spades8 of hearts6 of hearts
Top pair

A♣ 8♦ 6♥ makes top pair with a three kicker and no flush draw.

Strategic notes

Versus 3-bets
  • Call: Defend selectively when position and price support the suited wheel hand.
  • Fold: Against a tight range, the better Ax hands dominate too many pair runouts.
Versus 4-bets
  • Fold: Strong 4-bet value leaves A3s with too little clean equity.
  • Continue only: A rare exception requires a favorable blind-versus-blind price.
Post-flop playability
  • Draws: On a two-spade flop containing a 2 and a 4, A3s has the nut-flush draw and a gutshot to the wheel through a 5.
  • Control: When an ace flops without a three, A3s has top pair with a weak kicker, so keep the pot controlled.
  • Mistake: A paired ace is not enough by itself when stronger Ax hands remain in range.
