A of heartsQ of spades

Offsuit strong broadway

Ace-Queen Offsuit

AQo has strong high-card equity and dominates AJ, AT, and KQ, but AK dominates it when both hands make an ace pair. Without a flush draw, it relies more on position, fold equity, and careful pot control than AQs.

Open when:Most seats when the ranges behind and stack depth support it

Exact opening decisions depend on position and table conditions.

3bet when:A selective bluff with position and fold equity

The ace blocker is a reason for a selective bluff or value 3-bet, not a universal rule.

Call when:In position or from the big blind at a fair price

Out of position, dominated top pairs create reverse implied odds.

Jam when:Very shallow stacks make fold

Tournament ICM can change a reshove decision. equity and high-card equity valuable.

Fold when:A tight 4-bet or 5-bet range contains few worse hands

A strong starting hand can still be a fold at the wrong price.

Strong against

A of spadesJ of hearts
AJo

AJo shares the Ace but has the weaker kicker, making a dominated pair that can still pay AQo.

Weak against

  • A of spadesK of hearts
    AKo

AKo shares the Ace with the better kicker, so AQo can make a costly second-best pair.

Paired Ace-high

A♦ A♣ 7♥ gives top pair with a fragile kicker relative to full houses and stronger Ax in tight ranges.

Strategic notes

Versus 3-bets
  • Call selectively in position or from the big blind when the range is wide and the price is fair.
  • Avoid bloating the pot out of position when the 3-bet range contains many AK and strong pairs.
  • A small 4-bet bluff can exist against a range that folds enough, but it should remain rare.
Versus 4-bets
  • Fold often against tight value-heavy 4-bets, especially out of position.
  • Continue only when the price, depth, and range composition leave enough worse hands or bluffs.
  • Do not turn AQo into a stubborn bluff-catcher against a range that clearly dominates it.
Post-flop playability
  • Value line: Top pair on a dry ace-high board can take value from worse Ax and draws.
  • Broadway: AQo can make the broadway straight when the board connects with both hole cards.
  • Control line: Slow down on connected or paired boards when sets, two pair, and strong draws become more common.
