On T♦ 8♣ 2♥, 96s has 6-8-9-T with a missing seven. Only a seven completes the straight, so it is a gutshot.

Flush draw

On 8♠ 7♠ 2♦, 9♠ 6♠ has a nine-high, non-nut flush draw. Higher spades can make a better flush, so avoid treating every completion as a clean out.

Versus 3-bets

Defend selectively in position or from the Big Blind when the size and effective depth preserve implied odds.
Fold more often out of position against a tight 3-bet. Do not bluff 4-bet routinely because 96s is dominated by continuing value ranges.

Post-flop playability

96s has both open-ended and gutshot routes depending on the middle ranks. Do not label the draw from the hole cards alone: count the missing ranks on the actual flop.
Two board spades with one spade in 96s create a direct flush draw, but a nine-high flush is not the nut flush. One board spade gives only a backdoor route.
