K of hearts5 of spades

Weak offsuit King-high hand

King-Five Offsuit

K5o is the strongest of these four offsuit hands, but it is still a weak, disconnected holding. The five kicker beats K2o-K4o, yet better Kx hands dominate it on King-high boards. It has no flush potential and only narrow wheel-related straight routes. Fold from early and middle position. Defend mainly from the Big Blind against late opens at a good price, shallow-stack shoves require a chart.

Open when:Only in a chart-approved late-position or Small Blind branch

At 20bb or 100bb, do not make it a standard early-position open.

3bet when:Rarely as a blocker bluff

The King blocker helps, but poor called equity makes this a narrow action.

Call when:Big Blind versus Button or Small Blind

Closing the action and receiving a favourable price can justify a defence.

Jam when:Only in a chart-specific short-stack branch

Do not open-jam or reshove automatically.

Fold when:Facing early action or a large 3-bet

K5o is dominated by stronger Kings and has little post-flop coverage.

Strong against

K of spades4 of hearts
K4o

K4o shares the King but has the weaker kicker, making a dominated pair that can still pay K5o.

Weak against

  • A of spadesK of hearts
    AKo

AKo shares the King with the better kicker, so K5o can make a costly second-best pair.

Flop classes

K of spades8 of hearts2 of hearts
Top pair

On K♣ 8♦ 2♥, K5o has top pair with a weak kicker. Bet small or check back, especially at 100bb.

A of spades4 of hearts3 of spades
Gutshot straight draw

On A♠ 4♦ 3♣, K5o has a gutshot to a 2, which completes A-2-3-4-5.

Q of spades8 of hearts5 of hearts
Pair of fives

On Q♣ 8♦ 5♥, K5o has bottom pair. Call small bets selectively and fold to sustained aggression.

9 of spades8 of hearts7 of hearts
Connected low board

On 9♣ 8♦ 7♥, K5o has no pair and no direct straight draw. Check-fold.

Strategic notes

Versus 3-bets
  • Fold to standard 3-bets. The blocker is not enough to offset the risk of dominated top pairs.
  • A 4-bet bluff belongs only to an exploit or a validated chart. Do not use it as a default response at 100bb.
Post-flop playability
  • Control the pot with top pair. The five kicker can win against bluffs but rarely supports three streets of value.
  • K5o cannot make a flush with its hole cards. It can have a wheel backdoor when the board supplies several low ranks, but that is not a direct draw.
  • A pair of fives has modest showdown value and should not face large bets without a specific read.
