Pair with weak kicker

On Q♣ 4♦ 9♠, a four gives a pair but 42o remains vulnerable to larger pairs and better fours. Keep the pot small against pressure.

No pair or draw

On A♣ J♦ 8♠, 42o has no pair, direct straight draw, or useful backdoor route. Check and fold to a bet.

Strategic notes

Versus 3-bets

Fold: 42o should not defend against a 3-bet.
Do not 4-bet bluff: Its blockers are poor and its straight equity is rarely clean when called.

Post-flop playability
