Strategic notes

Versus 3-bets
  • Call in position when the price is fair and the opener's range remains wide enough.
  • A small 4-bet can exist against a range with enough folds, but it should not be automatic.
  • Out of position, keep AQs from bloating marginal pots. Its queen kicker does not solve every ace-high collision.
Versus 4-bets
  • Continue only when price, depth, and range composition justify it.
  • A deep call can be reasonable against ranges that keep bluffs and worse value hands.
  • Against a tight value-heavy range, the suited advantage may not compensate for domination and reverse implied odds.
Post-flop playability
  • Value line: Top pair on a dry ace- or queen-high board can take value from worse pairs and draws.
  • AQs can combine the nut-flush draw with a broadway gutshot on the right two-tone broadway texture. That combination supports pressure, but the sizing and range interaction still matter.
  • Control line: Slow down when the board pairs or connects and sets, two pair, and strong draws gain weight.
